Sometimes I feel left out of things. Like when someone asks you about your day and you tell them a great story only to find out that they don’t understand anything that I said and didn’t recognize the punch line and simply stare blankly instead of laughing along.
In the world of I.T. this happens quite often as let’s face it, you can be tech savvy and still not truly understand how things work.
One thing that I always try to do is speak the same no matter who I am with. While I may use more colourful language with friends than potential clients, I don’t speak from an elevated place that comes off as an arrogance as opposed to comfort in my knowledge and abilities.
This comes from a customer service related background while still having enough technical horsepower behind me to ensure clients feel like they know we have their back and are along for more than just the signature on a contract and then we’ll never be heard from again.
